Industrial Optics

Durable and reliable optical components for industrial sensing, LiDAR, laser rangefinding, and photoelectric detection — engineered to perform in demanding environments.

1. What Optical Problem Does This Industry Have?

Industrial sensing, laser rangefinding, and photoelectric detection systems require durable, reliable optical components that maintain performance under harsh operating conditions. Key challenges include:

  • Harsh environments — optics must survive vibration, shock, wide temperature swings, and exposure to dust, moisture, and chemicals
  • Long-term reliability — embedded sensors and LiDAR units require optics with 10+ year operational lifespans without degradation
  • Multi-wavelength operation — systems use 850 nm, 905 nm, 1550 nm for LiDAR; 635-670 nm for visible pointers; 8-14 μm for thermal imaging
  • Volume production — automotive and industrial IoT applications require thousands of identical units with tight specification control

2. What Specifications Are Critical?

Operating Temperature Range

Automotive grade: -40°C to +105°C. Industrial grade: -20°C to +70°C. Thermal stability of optical performance is critical.

Vibration & Shock Resistance

Components must survive mechanical shock (50g+) and continuous vibration without optical alignment shift or coating delamination.

Wavelength Precision

Bandpass filter center wavelength tolerance ±2 nm for LiDAR; AR coating performance matched to specific laser diode wavelength.

Power Handling

Laser sensor windows must handle continuous-wave or pulsed laser power without thermal damage or coating degradation.

Environmental Sealing

IP67/IP69K rated protection for outdoor and washdown applications. Optical windows serve as the sealing barrier.

Service Life

10+ years without performance degradation. Coating adhesion and substrate stability validated through accelerated aging tests.

3. What Materials Are Commonly Used?

BK7 Optical Glass

350 nm – 2 μm

Standard material for visible and NIR industrial sensors. Cost-effective, good optical quality, widely available.

Fused Silica

180 nm – 2.1 μm

For applications requiring superior thermal shock resistance and UV transmission. Low thermal expansion for dimensionally stable optics.

ZnSe (Zinc Selenide)

0.5 μm – 20 μm

Standard window material for thermal imaging systems (8-14 μm LWIR band). Essential for infrared temperature sensing and thermal cameras.

Germanium (Ge)

2 – 14 μm

High refractive index (n=4.0) makes it ideal for LWIR lens elements. Requires AR coating on both surfaces due to ~36% uncoated reflection.

Recommended Coatings

Coating selection depends on wavelength, power level and application environment. Common options for this application:

AR Coatings

Broadband anti-reflection coatings for visible and NIR industrial imaging systems. Reduces ghost reflections and increases throughput in inspection and measurement applications.

HR Coatings

High-reflectance dielectric coatings for laser processing mirrors and beam delivery systems used in industrial cutting, welding and marking.

Hard Protective Coatings

Durable overcoats for optics operating in harsh industrial environments — resistance to abrasion, coolant mist, cleaning agents and temperature cycling.

IR Coatings

Anti-reflection and filter coatings for near-infrared and short-wave IR industrial inspection systems. Enables wavelength-specific contrast enhancement.

4. What Coatings Are Commonly Required?

Anti-Reflection (AR)

Wavelength-specific AR coatings matched to laser diode emission (850 nm, 905 nm, 1550 nm). Reduces back-reflection into laser source and increases signal throughput.

High-Reflection (HR)

Dielectric HR mirrors for beam steering in LiDAR scanners. >99.5% reflectivity at target wavelength with low absorption.

Bandpass Filters

Narrow bandpass filters for ambient light rejection in optical sensors. Blocks sunlight and artificial lighting while passing signal wavelength.

5. What Manufacturing Challenges Exist?

Long-Term Environmental Stability

Optical coatings must maintain adhesion and spectral performance after years of thermal cycling, humidity exposure, and mechanical vibration. Accelerated life testing per Telcordia GR-1221 or IEC 60068 is often required.

High-Volume Consistency

Automotive LiDAR programs may require 100K+ units per year. Every unit must meet the same optical and mechanical specification — demanding reliable process control and SPC.

Cost-Performance Balance

Industrial applications demand optical quality at consumer-electronics pricing. This requires optimized manufacturing processes and supply chain management to achieve target cost points.

6. Which PhotonEdge Products Can Help?

Product Category Relevance
Optical Windows Sensor protection windows, LiDAR dome windows, environmental sealing optics for harsh conditions.
Optical Mirrors Beam steering mirrors for LiDAR scanners, flat mirrors for optical path folding in sensors.
Optical Filters Narrow bandpass for ambient light rejection, longpass/shortpass for signal wavelength isolation.
