K9 (equivalent to BK7/SCHOTT) is the most widely used optical glass. Transmission range: 330nm-2100nm. Refractive index Nd=1.51637, Abbe number Vd=64.17. Excellent homogeneity and low bubble content. Standard choice for visible and near-IR applications including lenses, prisms, windows, and mirror substrates. Available with AR, HR, and beamsplitter coatings.
UV Fused Silica (JGS1/JGS2/JGS3) offers exceptional transmission from 185nm to 2500nm with very low coefficient of thermal expansion (0.58×10⁻⁶/°C). Ideal for UV optics, high-power laser applications, and environments with large temperature fluctuations. Superior homogeneity and minimal fluorescence. Used in excimer laser systems, UV spectroscopy, and precision imaging.
Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) transmits from 600nm to 18µm with high IR transmission (T>70% @ 10.6µm). Chemically inert and non-hygroscopic. The preferred material for CO2 laser optics (10.6µm) and FLIR thermal imaging windows. Available with AR/DLC coatings for high-power and environmental protection. Minimum order quantities may apply due to material sourcing.
Germanium (Ge) transmits from 2µm to 14µm with high refractive index (Nd=4.003 @ 10.6µm), enabling compact optical designs. High hardness and good thermal conductivity. Widely used in LWIR thermal imaging, FTIR spectroscopy, and IR sensing systems. Requires anti-reflection coating due to high surface reflectivity (~36% per surface uncoated). Temperature-sensitive above 100°C.
Silicon (Si) transmits from 1.2µm to 7µm and again from 25µm to 300µm (far IR). Low density (2.33 g/cm³) and high thermal conductivity make it ideal for lightweight IR optics and laser scanning mirrors. Cost-effective alternative to Ge in MWIR (3-5µm) systems. Widely used in IR cameras, gas sensors, and free-space optical communication.
Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) transmits from 170nm to 7.8µm — one of the broadest transmission ranges of any optical material. Very low refractive index (1.4289 @ 587nm) enables high-efficiency AR coatings. Low solubility and high laser damage threshold make it ideal for UV excimer laser optics, fluorescence microscopy, and spectroscopy. Available in UV-grade (193nm ArF) and IR-grade variants.
Sapphire (Al₂O₃) transmits from 180nm to 4.5µm with extreme hardness (Mohs 9), making it virtually scratch-proof. Excellent chemical resistance and thermal stability up to 2000°C. Ideal for harsh environment windows, pressure viewport windows, watch crystals, and UV/VIS/IR windows requiring maximum durability. High birefringence must be considered in precision applications.
Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2) transmits from 115nm to 6.5µm — one of the shortest UV cutoff wavelengths of any optical material. Low refractive index (1.376 @ 587nm) makes it the industry standard single-layer AR coating for visible optics. Widely used in VUV optics, excimer laser windows, and as a coating material for broadband AR applications.
